Chapter Forty

Evie

Dave pointed to the CCTV camera, its small light still red. ‘If the notebook was in your bag at the meeting, we could see here if anyone took it.’

A frisson of excitement filled the room. Evie felt as though an enormous weight have fallen off her shoulders. A deep breath filled her with much needed oxygen. He believed her. This could be the answer to everything, to knowing who had it in for her.

Fiona, who’d already distanced herself from her husband’s sarcasm by perching on a Swiss ball alone, shot up and headed for the desk. ‘Great idea.’

‘Should we be doing all this? Sleuthing like Scooby-Doo and the gang? Shouldn’t we leave that to the police?’ Charles said, demonstratively staying put, stroking Pebbles in his arms.

‘What are you worried about, Velma?’ Suki teased. ‘Got a secret to hide?’

Evie gave her a warning look. She’d been forced to tell Suki about the affair, and Suki’d kept it to herself. For the moment. But she wasn’t sure how much she could trust her. The woman was a live wire.

‘Come on, Suki. You operated this last time,’ Dave said, standing, drumming his fingers, by the reception desk.

As the four of them congregated around the monitor and Suki clicked through a series of icons, Evie could feel Fiona lean against her. The skin-to-skin contact left Evie uneasy.

‘Did you kill me too?’ Fiona asked, a mixture of resentment and curiosity on her face.

Evie recoiled from Fiona’s stale breath. ‘I’m afraid I did, yes. Sorry.’

‘How?’ Her eyes shone with what Evie could only describe as an oddly morbid interest.

‘Once, strangled by Pebbles’s lead. The one you never bring. But mostly drowned in the floatation tank.’

Fiona stroked her very much unharmed throat. A slight sheen covered her cheeks. ‘Do you think I was meant to die in the tank today? What did I do?’ Fiona waved that question away. ‘No, don’t answer that. I can guess. My manager at the Lair has told me I can come across as a right bitch to staff.’

Evie was grateful she didn’t need to go into it. Her grievances seemed petty now. There were worse problems—something today most definitely showed.

‘What about Charles?’ Fiona asked, having taken a step away from Evie to peer back at her husband. ‘What killed him?’

‘A mango,’ Evie said, deadpan.

‘Will you two be quiet?’ Suki snapped. ‘I’m trying to concentrate.’ She clicked on yet another file and the screen filled with a view of an empty gym, bar Evie throwing towels over her desk.

‘Pause that,’ Evie said. ‘There, see? Underneath the table you can see my bag leaning against the side panel.’

‘And you’re certain the notebook was in there?’ Dave asked.

‘Yes.’

‘Okay. We keep going.’ Suki straightened and rolled her shoulders. ‘This could take a while,’ she said, fetching the chair. ‘If you guys want to sit this out until I’ve found something, that’s fine with me.’

Dave glared at Suki. Evie was half expecting him to say, ‘You would say that, wouldn’t you?’ again, like she was the killer.
